Whether that be point n' click, free roaming, ect. I'd love to see some of the best spooky games on here! Anything from scriptwelder is a bloody great horror game, especially the Deep Sleep trilogy. I really like the Last Door series, too. It's technically a standalone paid game, but the first three chapters out of eight are on NG.

It's exactly what a horror game should be — mystery, atmosphere and tension without relying on excessive gore and cheap jumpscares. This one by PeltastDesign is a murder mystery. Not the best example of a horror game, but it's in the ballpark. This one by arty-farty is of the more recent games here; although it isn't complete yet. But there's enough content for it to give some good horror vibes.

And if it's your kind of thing, there are dozens of various "haunted mansion" or "abandoned asylum" games which mainly rely on dark environments and jumpscares. I can't remember any in particular by name, though, but if you search using tags like "horror", "scary" or "ghosts", "demons", you'll get there. In general, I wouldn't call them "the best", though. You won't exactly be scared, but it's a dark game about demon hunting, so… And the voice acting is impeccable.
